Wococon was founded on Ocracoke Island, the most remote island in the Outer Banks. For the couple hundred people who call Ocracoke home, life revolves around the water. Nothing much better than that if you ask us. Wococon is a reflection of their lifestyle.
When Sir Walter Raleigh fist landed on the shores of Ocracoke in 1584 he encountered the Woccon Tribe. When he asked what the name of their country was, they replied with “Wingandacon”, which was heard as “Wococon”. The actual meaning was “You wear good clothes”. This is how Ocracoke got it’s original name, Wococon.
